All the areas in England that have seen Covid cases rise – including one in the North East

Latest figures show that a total of 10% of areas in England have seen coronavirus infection rates go up despite numbers plummeting across the rest of the country.

Newcastle, Watford, Wellingborough, Daventry and Mansfield saw the steepest increases, Public Health England figures reveal.

The statistics – for the seven days to April 3 – are based on tests carried out in laboratories and in the wider community. The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

On Wednesday, no Covid-19 deaths were reported in London, the east of England or the south west.

There were 2,297 cases confirmed – the lowest since September, with 45 deaths recorded in the UK.

But of the 315 local areas in England, 30 have seen a rise in case rates, while 278 – 88% – have seen a fall, with seven unchanged, reports The Mirror.

Corby in Northamptonshire continues to have the highest rate in England, with 103 new cases recorded in the seven days to April 3 – the equivalent of 142.6 cases per 100,000 people.

This is down from 214.6 per 100,000 in the seven days to March 27.

Wakefield has the second highest rate, down from 137.5 to 106.8, with 372 new cases. Barnsley has the third highest rate, down from 149.5 to 106.1, with 262 new cases.
