The Covid-19 infection rate in every local authority area as children return to school

Covid-19 infection rates and cases are falling in every area of the North East, the latest figures have shown.

Six areas of England are still recording rises in infection rates, but numbers are falling in the region, with Gateshead seeing its cases almost halved in seven days.

There are worries that cases could shoot up elsewhere too as schools reopened in the first stage of lockdown easing today.

School gates finally reopened on Monday after months of all but the children of key workers learning remotely in lockdown.

Boris Johnson today admitted case rates could “of course” shoot up again as children return, even as the vaccine rollout continues, The Mirror reports.

Youngsters will be last in the queue for the jab, but their turn is nearing as the Prime Minister revealed a third of the UK population have received a shot.

It came as the UK recorded its lowest virus death toll in five months, as the figure rose by 65.

Official figures also showed the UK registered 4,712 new cases in the past 24 hours.

There is typically a lag in deaths and case reporting on Mondays following a weekend.

The latest regional figures for England have also been published today, and show which areas are still struggling to keep case numbers down as restrictions begin to ease.

Of the 315 local areas in England, six have seen a rise in case rates, and 306 (97%) have seen a fall and three are unchanged.

South Derbyshire has the highest rate in England, with 161 new cases recorded in the seven days to March 4 – the equivalent of 150.1 cases per 100,000 people.

This is down 153.8 in the seven days to February 25.

Barnsley in South Yorkshire has the second highest rate, down from 166.9 to 148.7, with 367 new cases.

Hull is in third place, down from 158.2 to 148.2, with 385 new cases.

The six areas to record a week-on-week rise are Staffordshire Moorlands, Welwyn Hatfield, East Devon Canterbury, West Oxfordshire and Gloucester.

Full list of infection rates by area

The figures cover the seven days to March 4, and are based on tests carried out in laboratories and in the wider community (pillar two.

The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.

Data for the most recent four days (March 5-8) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

The list has been calculated by the PA news agency based on Public Health England data published on March 8 on the Government’s coronavirus dashboard.

Here is the list in full. From left to right, it reads: name of local authority; rate of new cases in the seven days to March 4; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to March 4; rate of new cases in the seven days to February 25; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to February 25.
