Two North East areas see increase in Covid-19 infection rates more than a month into lockdown

Two North East areas have seen an increase in their Covid-19 infection rates more than a month into lockdown.

Figures released by Public Health England show while there has been a drop in infection rates across England, 11 areas out of 304 have seen a rise, including North Tyneside and Sunderland.

Sunderland has seen an increase from 838 cases in the week up to January 28, to 889 cases in the week up to February 4.

This has caused the infection rate to jump from 301.8 per 100,000 to 320.1.

In North Tyneside, cases rose from 395 in the first week to 450 in the second week, with infection rates rising from 190.0 to 216.4.

Rutland in the East Midlands has been named as having the highest rate in England with 199 new cases recorded in the seven days to February 4, reports The Mirror.

This is the equivalent of 498.4 cases per 100,000 people which is more than three times up from 162.8 cases in the seven days to January 28.

The figures, which have been calculated by the PA news agency from health agency data, suggest the lockdowns currently in place across the UK are continuing to have an impact in driving down the number of new reported cases of coronavirus.

On Monday the UK’s official coronavirus death toll rose by 333, the lowest rise since December 2020.

The figures, for the seven days to February 4, are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).

The 11 areas where cases are increasing are:

Rutland

Mid Devon

North Tyneside

Ryedale

Sunderland

North East Lincolnshire

Hinckley & Bosworth

Bolton

Rushcliffe

East Lindsey

North Lincolnshire

The news comes as Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the Government had bought 50 million vaccine doses from CureVac following concerns about the South African coronavirus strain.

A small-scale trial of the AstraZeneca jab reportedly revealed it offered as little as 10% protection against the variant.

The Health Secretary said: “It’s imperative that our vaccination programme keeps pace with any changes to this virus.

“The work has three parts. First the evidence is that the existing vaccines have some effect against new variants, particularly preventing serious illness and mortality.

“So the existing vaccine rollout is mission critical for tackling new variants too.

“Second, we are working with existing vaccine suppliers on potential booster jabs targeted specifically at the new variants to strengthen this protection further.

“Third we are building on shore boosting capacity, including cutting edge MRNA technologies to give us the ability to rapidly to develop and deploy vaccines against any new variants or similar diseases in the future.”

These are the week-on-week figures for each local authority area in England, with the worst affected at the top.

The figures show: rate of new cases in the seven days to February 4 and the number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in this period; It then shows the rate of new cases in the seven days to January 28 and the number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in that timeframe.
